Aeon Woods is on a mission to create a Conservation Cemetery near NYC

Our goal is to offer burial options that are simple, affordable, and environmentally sustainable. Let’s normalize conversations about death and approach end-of-life decisions with agency and dignity.

Aeon Woods will be a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

What is a Conservation Cemetery?

A Conservation Cemetery combines two concepts: 1) simple, natural burials without toxic chemicals, precious wooden or metal caskets, and concrete vaults, and 2) certified land conservation through a perpetual legal agreement to protect the land for ecological, environmental, and public benefits.

Why should I care?

A Conservation Burial offers a profound opportunity to align your final act with your values and create a lasting legacy. Its simplicity promotes environmental sustainability, with scientifically supported benefits such as mitigating climate change and avoiding harmful chemicals that negatively impact both ecosystems and the health of workers in traditional funeral industries. Beyond its ecological advantages, Conservation Burial fosters profound social and cultural connections by inspiring conversations that are both deeply personal and universally meaningful. It encourages shared reflection and understanding among loved ones. It empowers individuals to embrace the full cycle of life in a natural, restorative environment, finding community and purpose in this shared experience.

When (and where) will you open?

We are early in the process to open the first one (hopefully in the Hudson Valley, within 1.5 hours of NYC). We will be the first conservation cemetery in New York State (and only the second natural cemetery) so we are charting a new legislative path to combine burials with a conservation easement on the same land.

The background work we’ve done so far leads us to believe that this project is possible and worth pursuing, but there is a lot of work ahead of us. We are too early to estimate a timeline but will keep this site updated!
